Age Difference Calculator

Two birth dates in, one exact gap out: how many years, months and days separate two people — siblings, partners, a parent and child, or any pair. The gap between two birth dates never changes, even as both people grow older.

How the gap is counted

The difference between two birth dates is the exact age the older person had reached on the day the younger one was born. So the same borrowing method applies: full years from the older birth date, then full calendar months, then the remaining days. A gap of “2 years, 3 months, 4 days” means the older child was exactly that old when their sibling arrived.

Because both birth dates are fixed points, the gap is fixed too. A couple with a three-year gap still has a three-year gap at their silver anniversary — what changes is each person's own age, which the calculator shows for today as a reference.

Frequently asked questions

Does the gap shrink as we get older?

No. The absolute gap stays identical for life. What shrinks is the relative gap — three years is a lot at age 6 and very little at age 60 — which is why age differences feel smaller over time.

What if both people share a birthday?

Then the gap is whole years exactly — or zero, for twins and same-day births.

Is there a “right” age gap for couples or siblings?

There is no scientific rule for that. Research on relationships and families looks at communication, circumstances and timing in life — not a magic number of months. This tool just gives you the number, neutrally.
